H.E.L.P. (Hampton Roads Ecumenical Lodgings and Provisions) Incorporated is a non-profit organization that ministers to the dignity and needs of the people in the Hampton community by providing assistance in the areas of housing, food, assistance, and health and dental care.
It maintains the H.E.L.P. House Family Center, a shelter for homeless families, as well as Transitional Housing for families who graduate from H.E.L.P. House and "A Night's Welcome" winter emergency shelter.
The H.E.L.P. Financial Assistance Program helps families avoid homelessness in times of critical financial distress and makes referrals to other agencies to further assist in homelessness prevention. The H.E.L.P. food pantry is located at Hampton Department of Social Services and distributes food Monday - Friday. The Bag Lunch Program operates each Saturday to distribute bag lunches at four different locations.
Also, medical services are provided to homeless and low-income individuals and families with no medical coverage at the H.E.L.P. Free Clinic. Volunteer doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, other health care professionals, and non-medical volunteers make up the staff.
Dental Clinic - On July 5, 2007 the H.E.L.P. Board of Directors voted to establish the H.E.L.P. Free Dental Clinic. The clinic is in partnership with the Greater Virginia Peninsula Consortium of Free Clinics and will serve as the Hampton/Newport News location for the Regional Dental Program funded by the Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Foundation and a Community Impact Grant through the United Way of the Peninsula.
The H.E.L.P. Prayer
O God, when I have food, help me to remember the hungry; when I have work, help me to remember the jobless; When I have a warm home, help me to remember those who have no home at all. When I am without pain or illness, help me to remember those who suffer; and remembering...help me to destroy my complacency, and bolster my compassion. And be concerned enough to help by word and deed, those who cry out for what we take for granted. Amen.
